Do you struggle to wait to drink tea or coffee after iron rich meals?

What about soda or sparkling water after eating calcium rich foods?

I force myself to wait for at least an hour, it is annoying at times.
Should I pay that much attention to it?

Favorite Articles/Links/Etc.? [24 Dec 2009|11:42pm]

[misledyouth00]
My husband's mom eagerly showed me her copy of Food Inc. today and told me how it ALMOST got her to "join your side". I didn't go into my feelings on the movie but I'm happy it at least got her thinking. The only thing she said that's holding her back is that she believes you need meat to be healthy. Now, obviously that's not true so I'd like to send her links and articles backing that up. If anyone could give me suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. However, I don't want things from anywhere she could claim was biased (like PETA or a specific animal rights organization)and I don't want things that'll scare her either. She already likes a lot of vegan food to the point where her and her husband will eat my cooking and come out with me to vegan restaurants. So I feel like shes close to being able to go all the way, if she just could be convinced on the health aspect. I've given her recipes and cooked for them in the past which while they've appreciated it, hasn't been enough to get them to at least finally give up meat. I'd love any tips or advice for helping people transition along with articles that might help. Thanks!

Eggs? [24 Dec 2009|12:43pm]

veganpeople

[acceptance__]
So I am vegan due to environmental, ethical, and moral reasons, one of my morals being that we should be way more involved in the production of our food. My parents just asked me if I would eat eggs if they were raising their own chickens. We live out in the sticks, so the chickens would be free range there would be no hormones and they would live off of grass and organic grains and I know that my parents are all for the ethical treatment of animals, they just also believe that humans were not meant to live on a completely animal free diet. So part of me is saying, "yes, eat the eggs, they are from happy, healthy chickens!" and part of me is saying, "No! Those eggs could be little chicken babies!" I am at a loss for what to tell them. I love being vegan, but I sometimes think that if I was raising all of my own food, including chicken, pork, and/or cattle, that I would become omnivorous.

So, my question to you is, what would you do in this situation and what is your argument for or against eating the eggs and possibly the chicken?

Also, I would like to add that my parents would never force me to eat something that I was not comfortable eating and they are actually extremely supportive and cook and eat vegan meals with me when I am home. We actually tend to bond over finding and cooking new vegan recipes or "veganizing" old family recipes.

I appreciate the time you take to answer this question!

(To the mods: I am really new at tagging posts, so if I do this way wrong, please feel free to edit/moderate!)

This community has been recommended to me by the lovely [info]friend_of_tofu, so here is my first post. :-) I have tried finding the answer to the question below both by Google and the community tags, so I thought I would ask.

Can anyone recommend any good books about UK farming from an environmental impact angle and has a scientific basis?

So making a shitload of money after getting out of jail and refusing invites to advocate for the dogs you harmed is what passes for courage these days. Good to know.

ASPCA - betrays the animals they are supposed to protect by Sloane Quealey

November 13th
Oreo, a pit bull mix, was hailed as a miracle dog when she survived being hurled off a Brooklyn rooftop last summer. She had two broken legs and a broken rib. Her owner was arrested on cruelty charges, and Oreo, a dark brown dog with white paws and forelegs and a white stripe down her forehead, was nursed back to health. Dozens of people expressed interest in adopting her. They will not get the chance. After overseeing her recovery, the ASPCA put Oreo to death on Friday, November 13, 2009 at 3:00 pm. After sitting in a cage in isolation, with very limited human interaction for weeks, wearing an elizabethan collar 24 hours a day, seven days a week, not because she needed it, but, because it made her easier for Victoria Wells the ASPCA’s unlicensed animal behaviorist to handle her, and after a reputable sanctuary offered to take her and assume all legal liability for her, Oreo was executed by the ASPCA. The ASPCA used Oreo to make money and then in order to save face killed her because if another sanctuary rehabilitated her it would have been more proof that they make decisions that are not in the best interest of the animals.

December 15th
The deadly duo (Ed Sayres & Victoria Wells) struck again when they put to death Max another pitbull. Read more... )

x-posted

Edit: Proof has been asked for; the woman who wrote the article says: "I know these things to be true from workers at the ASPCA and their conversations with Ed Sayres." Pretty sad that I have to defend this to a community of vegans, but Sloane has no vested interest in antagonizing the ASPCA; the ASPCA has a vested interest in donations (including nearly half a million dollars US annually for Sayres http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=3286).

Hi folks! You may remember several months ago I posted about a project I was working on. Sadly one of the people doing it left, which made us grind to a halt (since he had all the code on his servers). Anyway, after an additional team member and lots of hard work I present to you all:

Wiki Veganica!

There's not much there now, but please sign up and edit! Wikipedia was not built in a day!

If you would like to work on this project more in depth than an average user, please let me know (especially any tech oriented folks, graphic designers, and highly organized persons). Also if creating and editing pages is too hard/too much work for you but you have things you think should be in there (letters from companies about if things are vegan, well-researched info, etc.), please also send those my way!

I have wanted a community-edited vegan wiki for years so now here we go!

mini tv character victories [22 Dec 2009|09:50pm]

veganpeople

[affectionjunkie]
Does anyone else get excited when real life actors have an effect on their tv persona? By this I mean when an actor uses their pull to effect the way their character in shown to promote veg*n lifestyles? I could only think of vegetarian examples, but here are some off the top of my head:

* Casey Kasem (vegan in real life) refusing to voice Shaggy until the show made him a strict vegetarian.
* Dr. Temperance Brennen on the TV show Bones (Emily DeSchanel-vegan in real life) turning vegetarian.
* In a recent episode, Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein - vegetarian in real life) on House comes home from a stressful day and her boyfriend made her eggplant parm.

can anybody think of any others?

i checked the family and friends tag but didn't really see the same question. i feel like this has probably been talked about before but i thought i would bring it up because i'm unsure what tag it would be under.

i watched food inc. this morning with my dad and we got into a debate about the food industry. mostly agreeing that it is very corrupt and should be considered a monoply by the government but blahblahblah people working for the FDA, EPA, etc also work for the companies.

anyways. on the meat slaughter portions, i could barely watch and now he says he doesnt think he can eat meat for dinner tonight and doesnt get why i showed him that
what baffles me is that he can watch this, and it effects him for a few hours. but then tomorrow he'll go right back to eating meat. shouldn't seeing something like that effect you AT ALL? i have been not eating meat with him in the house for about 3 years now. i try to tell him my side of things and how disgusting it is and he agrees with me yet he doesn't want to make the change.

i always told myself i wouldnt be one of those people who shoves my animal rights beliefs on other people because, well, it can be annoying. but i'm constantly surrounded by this by people at school and my family. how they think its disgusting but they will just turn the other cheek and pretend it's not happening. i guess i just don't understand how someone can think one thing but do something completely different. thats whats turning our population and food to shit. the companies will have to supply what the people want. but the people cant seem to make the effort to change.

what are your opinions and thoughts on this? i guess mostly it was just a rant.

On the other hand, letting him stay inside isn't a good idea either since there are three cats here who are very interested in him. He's currently under a dresser, and Miso is keeping an eye on him. working vegan unhappiness [20 Dec 2009|12:15am]

veganpeople

[affectionjunkie]
We had our work holiday party this past friday. I went in to check with the caterer about food. The previous year they had gotten a pasta dish that was veganized for me and a general green salad.

I approach the new caterer and say "hello, I have some special dietary restrictions, I was wondering if you could tell me what I could eat?"
"what do you need to know about?"
"no meat or dairy."
She gives an unhappy look. "Hmmm, I don't think we have anything, I'm really sorry. The cucumbers have feta, there are steak custinis, pasta with vodka and pork inside, meatballs, mozzarella and tomato skewers.....I'm really sorry, I have nothing for you."
I must have made a sad face because she jumped in with "I realize its hard. I'm a vegetarian, so I understand. I wish I knew, I could have done something. Pity your company didn't chose the veggies and hummus because that would have been an option."
I talked to her a bit more as she rolled up cream cheese wrapped in bacon and sliced it. Ends up the bread slices for the steak crustinis were vegan, so she set some aside and drizzled olive oil on them for me.

So, in recap, for my work's holiday party, I had three pieces of bread at the party. I've worked there for about a year and a half. Happy holidays to me indeed.

ps- ugh, a vegetarian caterer who is serving steak and bacon. I understand work is work, but, ugh, really? She makes up the menus....
EDIT FOR CLARIFICATION: the caterer ran her own business where she was the one in charge of putting together the food options and and ordering all the food ingredients.

Food, Inc [19 Dec 2009|10:00pm]

veganpeople

[pagelife]
Food, Inc. was finally out to be rented and, of course, I found the need to watch it. Now that I've just finished it, I happened to stumble upon this somewhat irritating comment on Youtube.
The whole vegetarian is the way to live is BS. The way to stay healthy is to eat plenty of vegetable and the right amount of meat. Vegetarians do tend to have protein deficiency and iron deficiency. Growing children and pregnant women can also be nutritionally deficient if they are vegetarian and not try hard enough to get a balanced meal. Studies of vegetarians living longer do not count into the fact that most vegetarians are health nuts who exercise a lot.
.. And someone else replied "Yeah and same for vegans too". I don't know why but I just felt like posting this up. Any comments on this and/or the documentary? Also, many people (like my own mother) insist that organic products are a waste of money and is of no benefit. Some people even say it adds to corporate abuse. Is that true?

more carnivores than herbivores? [19 Dec 2009|11:39pm]

veganpeople

[kaptnjack]
This may seem like a weird question but... are carnivorous species more common than herbivorous ones or vice versa? Or are they roughly even? It seems to me that there would be less carnivores, since hunting is not a terribly efficient way to get food, and too many carnivores would eat all the herbivores.

the question popped into my head while watching Cosmos, Carl Sagan poses a hypothetical world of predators and prey on another planet, and makes note that predators would be rare in comparison to prey, in order not to drive the prey extinct.

i guess it would serve vegans to know this, seeing as every omnivore seems to think every other animal is a meat eater, and therefore we should eat meat too.

blackstrap molasses [18 Dec 2009|10:27pm]

I was intrigued by the recent post talking about how blackstrap molasses contained 70% of the RDA of iron. So i decided to run to the store to get some to put in my morning oatmeal. I went to our local health food store and found a problem. The highest RDA of iron I could find on any of the blackstrap molasses bottles was 20%. I checked and double-checked. Some were organic, some didn't say, some were fair-trade, but they all said blackstrap molasses and ranged from 10% - 20%. Am i missing something about the molasses, cause I was very excited to be able to put it in my oatmeal each morning. And the serving size on each bottle was one tablespoon.

US vegans more than double over 3 yrs [18 Dec 2009|10:37am]

veganpeople

[dagda_ollathir]
Feel free to correct my math here if I'm wrong, and I know polls have margins of error, but...

I was comparing the 2006 and 2009 VRG poll on how many people in the US are veg/ vegan. I realize not everyone is from the US, but I think these results are amazing nonetheless.

2009 Veg- 3%
2006 Veg- 2.3%

2009 Vegans of that 3% - 1% Vegan and don't eat honey, 1.3% "Vegans" who eat honey
2006- 1.4% Vegan, no idea what breakdown honey eating vegans.

I did the math for the US pop, and here's what i got-
2006- 96,099 vegans
2009- 210, 450 vegans - a bit more than double in 3 yrs!

I think that's fucking amazing. And yes, vegans don't eat honey, but just in terms of how many animals are saved, this is incredible. Coupled with the ever increasing media awareness of vegan issues, I'd wonder if vegans might triple in 2012..

Link to the 2009 poll:
http://www.vrg.org/press/2009poll.htm

ETA # of vegetarians
2009: 9,150,000
2006: 8,9554,000 ish

Kellogg's cereal - not vegan (USA) [17 Dec 2009|10:58pm]

veganpeople

[rice_dream_girl]
I read through the tags and found a few confused entries concerning whether or not Kellogg's cereals are vegan. I emailed them today and got this reply:

Emma,

Thanks so much for your email!

The animal derived ingredients we use in cereals includes gelatin (in the frosting of Mini-Wheats and in cereals with marshmallow bits), vitamin D, or whey (used in Special K for added protein). The following cereals do not have any of these ingredients:

Mini-Wheats ® Unfrosted Bite Size
SK Protein Plus
SK Red Berries

Vitamin B12 is from a non-animal source. It is both Kosher and Halal. The vitamin premixes used in Kellogg products include Vitamin D. Our ingredient specification for Vitamin D says that we can use either Vitamin D2 or D3 in our products. Vitamin D3 is derived from lanolin, an animal product. Vitamin D2 is not animal-derived. In either case, the vitamin premix is Kosher certified.

Since some vegans avoid any animal derived ingredient, and since all our cereals are fortified with vitamin D, none of our cereals would be acceptable to someone on a strict "no animal derived ingredients" diet.

We appreciate your interest in our company and products.

Sincerely,

Nikki Weitnauer
Consumer Affairs Department

Conversation starters for stalls [18 Dec 2009|12:26pm]

veganpeople

[gallstone]
On weekends, my boyfriend and I used to do Animal Liberation stalls outside a busy market, and we'd like start doing them again tomorrow. It's basically just us, a table with a whole bunch of pamphlets and an animal lib sign so people know who we are. We just sort of try to grab people's attention and then talk about veganism/animal cruelty/factory farming and then give them pamphlets and stuff if they are interested.

Usually when we do these stalls we borrow a prop from our local animal lib office - a cage with scarily realistic looking paper mache chickens squished inside to represent a battery cage farm. It always grabs attention (mostly from people being disgusted or feeling the need to ask us 'ARE THEY REAL???') which leads to conversations.

Because we won't be able to get it for tomorrow, I'm interested in other ways of (verbally) getting people's attention so as to start conversations.
Usually I just ask something like "Do you know much about factory farming?", but I don't think it's very effective as most people just ignore it.

So basically, my question is, apart from "Do you know much about _____ (veganism, animal cruelty in Australia, etc)?", what would you guys suggest as good one line conversation starters to get people interested in coming to talk to us?

I guess this is probably a strange request, but as am I am pretty socially awkward I find it hard to think of these things myself...

Thanks in advance!

Veganing in Italy (Florence and Rome) [17 Dec 2009|09:44pm]

On Sunday I am leaving for Rome to spend about 8 days between Florence and Rome for the Holidays. I looked through the tags and happycow, but I felt like getting an updated recommendation. The Hostels I am staying at have kitchens so I probably won't eat out too much, but is there a restaurant that I absolutely HAVE to check out while there?

As much as I don't like to admit this to myself, I do feel kind of left out on this trip since so many people rave about how authentic Italian food is so amazing. The amazing part is usually related to the cheese and meat type things or the fresh egg pasta. I know there are also really good vegan marinara sauces and everything, but yeah it still kinda sucks a little. I am really psyched about the trip though!

Iowa? [16 Dec 2009|09:43pm]

veganpeople

[devolute]
So I'm thinking of movie to Iowa to do an AmeriCorps program. I will end up in either Cedar Rapids or Cedar Falls. I've looked on Happy Cow, and I know the vegan-friendly restaurant options will be limited. I'm wondering if anybody has been to/lives in one of these towns and can tell me if I'll be able to find veg items at a grocery store (perhaps there are co-ops?), or if I'll have to order online or something. I lived in rural Italy for a bit and I never found tofu or tempeh or any soy alternatives (besides milk and the sometimes egg-free gelato), but I was surrounded by fresh produce (it was spring) so I didn't really care. Otherwise, I've mostly only lived in Portland and Eugene as a vegan, both of which have TONS of vegan food. I can't imagine not being able to find nutritional yeast and Tofutti cream cheese at the supermarket!

If you're not from Iowa, perhaps some of you still have experience living in towns without a lot of good organic food and vegan alternatives? What did you do?

Thanks!

how much protein to eat? [17 Dec 2009|04:27pm]

[kaptnjack]
hello all you lovely vegan people,

I just formulated a basic meal plan using http://www.dietitian.com/calchelp.php it tells you how much of what particular food group you need each day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

it says I need 100 grams of protein a day...this is really confusing to me. i thought you were supposed to eat between 30-50 grams at most, and eating a lot more than that could be dangerous.
Should I follow their advice and eat 100 grams a day? Or are they mad?

here's what was calculated for me fat, protein, and carb wise;

Fat grams: 67 grams - 28%
Protein grams: 100 grams - 21%
Carbohydrate grams: 250 grams - 51%

The National Lawyers Guild has a new report on state-level versions of the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act that have been popping up around the country. As I’ve reported here previously, on laws such as the California Animal Enterprise Protection Act, they use sweeping, overly broad definitions of terrorism that are, in some cases, even worse than the federal law. (Here’s one of my all-time favorite blog posts in which a Tennessee lawmaker describes how similar legislation is needed to combat “left-wing eco-greenies.”

Hey folks - I looked around, and didn't see an answer to this one, so hopefully ya'll will be able to help me out.

My dad has been steadily cutting animal-based foods out of his diet for awhile now (hasn't eaten red meat in years, no chicken for months and months, and he never liked to drink milk in the first place, heh) but he recently borrowed my copy of The China Study, and now is looking to get rid of the last dairy products he consumes - Ensure protein drink, and Yoplait Digestive Health Yogurt.

I know that there are plenty of soy-based yogurts for him to try, but what should I suggest to replace the Ensure? I did a few searches, and I can't find anything specific. Unfortunately, this isn't something he can just stop using - he eats like a bird, and it helps him maintain a healthy weight. So, I wonder if you fine folks could suggest some products for me to pass along to him.

Thanks!

I'm noticing a whole lot more food products that specifically say 'suitable for vegans' on the package at the regular old grocery store. It makes me feel happy :]

How about you? Do you think there is more vegan food available now than a few years ago?

Being Vocally and Publicly Vegan [14 Dec 2009|11:27pm]

[____hissunshine]
I have a problem being vocal about my veganism. I feel bad asking for special food at restaurants, and answering questions to strangers. I usually say the least as I can. I know it is my responsibility to speak up, and I do to my family and friends, but not anyone else. Today I really was disappointed in myself.

My Bichon Frise, Faith, (4 years old), always had food problems. She never was happy and healthy until I became Vegan, and then she became Vegan. Even my omni-rooomates dog tries to steal her food. She went to the vet today for an ear infection (she is prone to overgrowing yeast) and the vet wanted to give her a chicken treat before she left. I told her she doesn't really like treats (stupid I know! What dog doesn't like treats?) and she was like oh she'll like this and gave it to her. Well, Faith threw it back up in the lobby area. I have no idea why, But I felt so bad. Shouldn't I have spoken up? I didn't want her to look at me like i was crazy for raising my dog vegan. I know when I have children I am definitely going to have these issues as well.

How "vocal" are you about your veganism?
Were you always that way?
Why do you choose to be vocal or quiet?
What tips do you have for me?

Thank you!!!

For all the people who still think mollusks are "not sentient" or "not animal" or whatever craziness, the BBC has an article up about a species of octopus that uses coconut shells as shelter.

Here is a link to the story, complete with video.

so feel free to delete, mods

Personally, I'd like to see a coalition formed between these anti-Coca Cola groups and organizations like SHARK that are taking Coke to task for supporting rodeos. Some deeper kind of solidarity between organizations.

In another major victory for the international campaign against Coca-Cola, colleges and universities in Norway have decided not to renew the exclusive contract with Coca-Cola.

Students across Norway have been campaigning to significantly restrict Coca-Cola's contract on campuses because of the company's mismanagement of water resources in India.

Students had argued that Coca-Cola's existing 90% market share on campuses made it difficult for students to exercise their right to buy ethical products on campus.

Shameless Promotion - Smokers' Cleanse [14 Dec 2009|10:57am]

Smokers' Cleanse

I wanted to let all of you smokers-who-wish-you-were-ex-smokers know about a fully vegan smoking cessation product that actually works. I bought it some time last year and it sat around as I whined and cried about how difficult it would be for me to try to quit again. I finally started taking it about 2 months ago as an "Aw hell I'm broke, I might as well try to quit again" impulse. In the first couple of weeks I still had mad cravings, and I cheated a few times, even bought a pack. Each time I smoked a cigarette while I was on the cleanse, it tasted like utter crap and I couldn't finish it. I also got barely any satisfaction out of those few drags I took. That pack I bought, I gave away after the one half a cigarette I smoked. Oh, and no worries, you can smoke while on this stuff without having a heart attack. You just won't want to after a few attempts.

Now, they say you can safely take the product for up to six months, but after just one box (30 days' worth) I've been fine. In the month I've been finished I've only had a few very mild cravings. I tried so many other products over the years and NOTHING has worked even close to as well as this stuff.

Literally EVERY other time I tried to quit over the 15 years I smoked, cravings were intense and withdrawals were naaaaasty. I quit from 2005-2007 and even after those 2 years I wanted a smoke every day all day. Just 2 months into quitting after using this product and I'm fabulous! Here's the kicker - my Mom smoked for almost 45 years. She'd tried even more methods to quit than I did. She's doing just as well as me after just one box, also!

I swear I'm not getting paid to push this product, I just was really completely amazed by how well it worked for my Mom and me. It doesn't say it on the website, but it is vegan. I'm sorry this is so tl;dr, I'm just that excited that I've finally quit for good!

Oh, eh, and if you google it, you'll find it cheaper. I got it on sale at the local health food store for US$30. (I hope it's available outside of the US!)

I'm sure something like this has been posted before but I thought people might find it interesting nonetheless. On MSN's front page today is an article called "6 Tips to Build Your Strongest Bones". On the first page when suggesting eating greens they talk about the catch-22 of cow's milk products and how they aren't as beneficial as most people think. Here's the snippet from the article.

Got greens?
Most dairy products that come from cows, such as milk and cheese, have nutritional elements that you want: calcium and protein. But when you consume cow’s milk and its derivatives, there’s a catch. The high protein content in dairy items acidifies the blood, causing the body to draw calcium from the bones to balance it out. The net effect of this is to leach more calcium from the body than you gain.
Additionally, the protein molecules in milk are larger than the molecules a human digestive system is meant to handle, so the immune system may reject them as foreign, or allergenic. That’s why many people experience fatigue, lowered ability to concentrate, and overproduction of mucus when they eat dairy. Some people lack enzymes, such as lactase, to properly digest dairy sugar; for them, consumption of dairy causes stomach pain, gas and diarrhea. For the best protection against osteoporosis, take advantage of the absorbable calcium found in leafy greens, beans and seeds.

bubble teas/ 'pearl milk teas' [14 Dec 2009|03:10am]

veganpeople

[euphoric1dr]
Hi again guys,

Thanks for the feedback re: my last post on the bugs! Means a lot to me.

I forgot to ask this in my last post, but it's something I've been trying to get an answer to.
Here in Taiwan, these bubble tea drinks are very popular; one can find these tea shops absolutely everywhere. I'd really like to try them, however I'm not sure if they have milk or not.

I notice that they usually add POWDER instead of actual MILK to the tea, in fact if you want a kind of 'latte' drink like in Starbucks or other coffee shops, where they add the actual milk together with the coffee/tea, it's usually more expensive. So normally they add these different flavor powders (taro, red bean, vanilla, green tea) to plain black or red tea - and I wondered if that powder has milk? Is it possible to get 'pearl milk tea' without milk, and how could I ask for that?

Well in any case, I have to say what's really great about Asian supermarkets is that you can find plenty of non-dairy beverages, it's great! Soy milk of course, but also almond, rice, peanut, yam, taro, something called job's tears which I have never heard of until coming here, Mung bean. But I'd still like to try the pearl tea!

bugs and pests in the home [13 Dec 2009|09:18pm]

veganpeople

[euphoric1dr]
So I'm currently residing in Taiwan, where there are tons of cockroaches everywhere. I really can't stand cockroaches, but of course I feel terrible killing them...I was talking to a lady here, and she considers herself to be a very strong Buddhist. Yet, she told me its okay to kill them...I was somewhat surprised with this.

There aren't a TON of them, but there are enough of these bugs crawling around my apartment that, well, it does get quite annoying! Can anyone suggest what to do? If I kill the cockroaches with bug spray, is it really that bad?

Would you do the same, be it cockroach, spider, any other huge bug?
I don't know anything about how dangerous etc these bugs are, but they do bite at night so that also gets a little frustrating.

Tempeh question [12 Dec 2009|05:16pm]

[harvestl]
I just opened a thing of tempeh (westsoy company) to make some tex mex tacos, and as I was ripping it up to crumble it, I noticed a lot of little white fuzz everywhere I broke off chunks. There wasn't any on the very outside of the tempeh, I just saw it where I ripped off pieces. It looked like mold, but he expiration date was dec. 26, 2009, it had been in the fridge, and it didn't smell funny. I'll be eating it in about an hour, mold or not, but I just wanted to ask about it. I don't recall ever seeing fuzz in my tempeh, just clean breaks between pieces.

Just a question to create dialogue [12 Dec 2009|10:52am]

veganpeople

[leastconcern]
So, I recently have been reading a lot of disability rights stuff, and I found that Peter Singer (author of Animal Liberation), was spouting some real pro-eugenics stuff: that disabled children should possibly be the ones donating hearts rather than baboons, and that they are less valuable than healthy animals [Edit: This was actually a quote from a different person, read the wrong line, apologies]. What was actually written by Singer; "We think that some infants with severe disabilities should be killed" and proposed that it be made legal to kill such a child within approximately the first twenty-eight days of life. [No Pity by Shapiro, page 273)

I just wanted to create some dialogue, and see how perhaps some other people try to level [or balance] out the sometimes ableist comments that come from some animal rights activists and AR theorists, and if anyone here who else is disabled and AR feel about this. This is to explore the ablism that can sometimes happen within the AR community.

Edit: Adding the actual book, titled "Should the Baby Live? The Problem of Handicapped Infants" by Peter Singer and Helga Kuhse.

Edit: Just editing on recommendation by the mods to show what the intention of this thread is. Nothing is deleted! The bolding is for highlight, and the italics are for what I added to contextualize it a bit more if it did appear unclear. I apologize that it was not clear beforehand.
